Microsoft Expands Rollout of Color Battery Icons and New Start Menu in Windows 11

Microsoft is gradually enabling more visual and security improvements for Windows 11, with the latest optional update extending the availability of colorful taskbar battery indicators and the redesigned Start menu to additional devices.

The wider rollout comes through the February 2026 preview update, KB5077241, as part of Microsoft’s phased feature delivery approach.

Color Battery Indicators Reach More Users

The updated battery icon, which has been in testing since late 2024, replaces the traditional monochrome design with colour-based status indicators intended to make power levels easier to understand at a glance.

The new behavior includes:

  • Green when the device is charging, along with a lightning symbol
  • White during normal battery use
  • Orange when Battery Saver activates (automatically at around 30% or manually)
  • Red when the battery drops below 6%

The redesigned icon is also larger for improved visibility, and users can now enable a battery percentage display directly on the taskbar through Settings > System > Power & Battery.

New Start Menu Continues Gradual Deployment

Microsoft confirmed that the redesigned Start menu is also being activated for more systems. However, as with most Windows feature releases, availability depends on the company’s staged rollout process.

Users who want earlier access can enable the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” option in Windows Update, though final availability still depends on Microsoft’s A/B testing distribution.

Ongoing Taskbar Improvements

The expanded rollout reflects broader refinements to the Windows taskbar over the past year. Recent updates have restored or improved several features, including:

  • Drag-and-drop support
  • Automatic resizing when space is limited
  • Additional customization improvements, with further changes expected

Secure Boot Certificate Update in Progress

Alongside visual changes, Microsoft is also distributing updated Secure Boot certificates issued in 2023. These replacements are required ahead of the expiration of existing certificates in June 2026.

The company said the rollout is ongoing and will reach all supported devices before the deadline.

Gradual Feature Delivery Remains the Standard

Microsoft continues to release many Windows 11 changes over extended periods rather than through a single update. While KB5077241 enables the new battery icons and Start menu for more users, some systems may still receive them later as the phased deployment continues.

The approach allows Microsoft to monitor compatibility and stability across different hardware configurations while gradually expanding access to new features.
